With teachers learning how to take on challenges like taking virtual attendance on Zoom, augmented reality lessons may seem too daunting to attempt, but for those teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic, it can create a much-needed sense of connection for students.

By bringing the powerful technology that we now carry with us daily into the classroom, students can be actively engaged in learning, while developing fluency in technology crucial for success as they get older.

One of the exciting applications of AR in the classroom is that it can help visualize for students concepts that are difficult to explain purely in a lecture format and can enhance learning for students at all levels.

Apps like Arloon help students engage with their environment by teaching them about plants and how to care for them.

For young learners, Pete the Cat builds engagement and incorporates music into its games.

For a more extensive AR experience, Google Expeditions and Tour Creator is an excellent tool for students and teachers alike. 

Students can take tours and classes through Google’s partners like Coursera, while teachers can create specialized tours for students.

This can take classes through Egyptian tombs or on a lesson through the rainforest. Expeditions can be custom-built, or you can explore the app on its own. 

AR Tools and Platforms

In addition to using pre-built augment reality programs, teachers can be in control of the content that their students are experiencing.

Outside of apps that come with pre-determined content, tools like Augment and ZVR allow teachers to create tailor-made content for their students.

The applications vary from 3D visualizations of two-dimensional media to using specialized glasses to let students created their own AR experiences.

This is especially useful for teachers in specialized schools or teaching advanced programs. 

What are the Challenges of Bringing AR to the Classroom

Introducing augmented reality to some students may be difficult, depending on where your students are located, and what their family’s economic standing is, technology like smartphones and tablets may not be readily available to them.

Students in underserved communities are already struggling with a lack of consistent internet for their education.

Integrating AR into the classroom can create excellent learning opportunities, but you have to make sure that opportunity is available to all of your students.

Some students are using local libraries or community centers for their education.

Find out if the school, library, or community centre close to your students has a technology program available that will let them check out the technology they need during class.

There are also organizations dedicated to putting technology in the hands of students.
