Starting a Successful Blog. Part 1.

I had been toying with the idea of starting a successful blog for quite a while but it all seemed a bit difficult and expensive so, being a teacher with limited free time I put the idea on the back burner and got on with my normal day to day life.

(Disclaimer: Bluehost links on this page are afiliate links, if you use them to buy hosting or a domain name I get a little financial bonus, it does not cost you any extra but helps me keep this website running, thanks).

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine suggested I get my arse in gear on get on with it (it seems I have been going on about writing a book or starting a blog for longer than I thought). He suggested I look at Bluehost as he uses it. It was easier and cheaper than I thought and given that it was the Easter holidays/Spring break and I finally had some spare I thought I’d give it a go.

As you can see (you are reading the blog!) I was successful so, like a good blogger I decided to write about it and give you the option of starting your own blog or website for a discount.

The first task was to choose my own domain name, I found this quite exciting (as you may now be understanding, I’m a bit of a nerd!). You can see if your dream domain name is available below.

Signing up.

Once I had found my domain I went to the sign up process. It was very quick. I went for the cheapest 1 year basic package as It seemed to have all the things I needed with the option of adding things later if I found I needed them. This was good because I had no idea what I was doing. Some options were pre-selected so I just unchecked the boxes and it removed the additional costs from my final fee. You have to pay the whole 12 months upfront, that’s the only downside but since I started I’ve checked other providers and they all seem to require the same (luckily for you lot you get a discount by clicking my link 😉).

The thing that took the most time was choosing my theme…mainly because I’m very indecisive 😂. Once chosen I set it up in about an hour. Bluehost offers great support in the form of live chat which I used but there are also lots of YouTube videos that take you through it step by step.

Once it’s up and running you can easily write and publish new posts using WordPress. WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms, it is also included in your subscription. I am writing this post using the WordPress app, whilst in a car park, waiting for an appointment… you do!

The whole experience is very slick and easy to use…it must be…I’m doing it! So if you fancy giving blogging a go or you want to set up an inexpensive website for your business click my link or use the domain availability checker on this post and get started.

If you have any questions or suggestions please leave a comment.
