How Teachers Can Earn Extra Money.

Teaching sadly doesn’t pay as much as we’d like and unfortunately, huge numbers of teachers are forced to supplement their income with third or even third jobs. It is a sad fact that this is so common.

Whether we need extra cash to pay bills, put food on the table or even just have a bit of spare cash for family activities, the question remains the same; How can teachers earn extra money.

How can we do it?

Over the last few years, I have done many different things to keep afloat. I figured I wouldn’t be alone in this so I thought I’d gather together the 17 best ways how teachers can earn extra money.

I’ve tried to make sure these suggestions can be utilised in as many countries but as I am from England and a lot of my readers are from the United States some of them will be country specific. They should, however, give you a spark of the idea though. Some are more a quick fix and others may be more a slow burn that could last you many years.

Let’s see the list:

1. Tutoring.

The most common way that teachers subsidise their income is with private tutoring. I’m sure most of you do it already but I want to touch on it briefly because it’s easy and profitable. Lots of parents want the best for their little angels and they are happy to part with cash to help them to gain better grades. I advertise on social media and tutoring specific websites. In England the best one I have found is tutorhunt. You make a simple profile stating your areas of expertise and how much you charge and wait till the enquiries roll in. In the USA I have found wyzant and superprof. I charge between £35-£40 per hour ($48-$55) so it can really help pay the bills.

2. Dog Walking.

Want to keep fit and earn extra? Maybe you could walk dogs for a boost? This seems to be especially popular in cities with lots of those poor folk who don’t get the summer off (ouch). Charging £10-£15 per pet can mount up when you can walk more than one dog at a time. offers to register you as a dog walker but you can also ask about on your social media and classified sites like craigslist.

3. Sell Your Teaching Resources.

If you make great lesson resources you could also sell those. Mine aren’t great so I don’t do this one but I have teacher friends who do this as a sideline and it’s pretty easy since you’ve already done the hard work and road tested your stuff! teacherspayteachers is a very popular site in the US for this method but there are many others (In the UK you could look at TES. This method has the benefit of not really requiring much of a time investment. Tip: If your resources are a bit like mine (average), team up with a colleague who does produce top stuff and do it together and share the profits.

4. Write a Book.

Have you always wanted to write a book? Maybe its time to do it! These days you don’t always have to be lucky enough to find a publisher, (although this is a great way to do it) you could write an eBook. Kindle Direct Publishing is a great place to start as it will then be available on Amazon. I don’t have much experience of this one but a friend of mine (and contributing author on Matt Davis of mine has done just this.

His book “The Vampire Hunter’s Field Manual: A Survivors Guide to Narcissistic Abuse” is a great read (and hugely relevant to teachers who have horrible bosses (trust me!)).

5. Uber Driver.

Something that more and more teachers are trying both in the summer and throughout the year is becoming an Uber driver (or regular cab driver). It is a great way to fit earning extra money around everyday life. There are different requirements in different countries, so a little research would be a good idea but it doesn’t seem to be that difficult to get started. 6. Pet Sitting.

If you love animals I don’t think there is a better way to earn some cash than to look after someone’s beloved pet AND get paid for it. You could advertise on social media, a lot of areas in cities have their own Facebook groups, or you can advertise on classified websites such as Craigslist (available in lots of countries. Sometimes the owners require you to sit at their house sometimes you get to take them home! If you get a gig looking after a pet at your client’s house maybe you could combine it with renting out your own place on Airbnb (Check tip 7 on this list).

7. Airbnb.

Do you have a spare room or are you travelling or visiting friends/family during the summer? If so, you could rent out your home on Airbnb. Airbnb is a very successful and highly trusted company who operate worldwide. Their insurance covers you if anything were to go wrong. They have 24/7 support and an online community of experienced hosts to help you get set up. If you have the opportunity, this is a great way to earn a good chunk of cash in a short time. Follow this link for more info: Airbnb

8. Create and Sell (online and in person).

Can you create beautiful jewellery, clothing or art etc? If so, why not use Etsy to sell it to the world? You can buy amazing things on Etsy that you can’t find on the high street (my wife and I bought our wedding rings from an Etsy seller and they are great. Etsy is becoming bigger and bigger and there’s always a niche to fill. Find out more here: Etsy

9. Start a Blog.

Not necessarily an obvious or immediate source of extra income but with time it can work for you. The benefit of this is that your blog, once established can work for you 24 hours a day. It is also a great way to get your thoughts, opinions and reviews out there for all. Find out how I started (and to get a 50% discount on hosting through my affiliate link) on my post here.

10. Child Minding/Sitting.

You are an expert at looking after children, If you can stomach it you could look after them during your holiday time…..Don’t run away screaming….hear me out! As a teacher in the UK you are DBS checked already so you have proof you are a safe person for people to leave their little angels with. There are various agencies in most countries that can help you find clients but you can also follow the same methods as finding a pet to sit (in tip 6). OK so looking after kids may not be as enticing as a getting to cuddle someone else’s dog but hey, it’s worth looking at! Can help here.

11. Bar or Restaurant Work.

A tried and tested method of making extra cash. I know you’d much rather be sat eating in the restaurant or drinking in the bar but needs must. I’ve done lots of bar work in the past to supplement my income and it’s great fun. Let’s face it, there’s not a lot of difference between a class of noisy children and a bar full of noisy adults, most of the conversations you have are repeated over and over! There are also tips too, these can be very good, especially if you know how to work a crowd…as teachers that’s our bread and butter!

12. Mystery Shopping.

Do you love to shop? Would you like to get paid to shop? Of course you would! Maybe you could register with one of the many mystery shopper agencies. You generally have to give feedback on your shopping experience. Secret Shopping is one of the agencies in the US, ukmysteryshopper is in the UK.

13. Drug/Medical Trials.

It sounds scary (it’s not) but if you have a couple of weeks spare and fit the profile required for studies you can earn quite a lot of money (sometimes thousands) from it. In the US you can find more info here. In the UK flucamp is one that I’ve registered with.

14. Flipping Furniture.

A relatively new venture people are undertaking is “flipping furniture”. Finding furniture online or in secondhand shops that, with a bit of care and love can be sold for more. You can find out more about it here. I’ve spoken to several people who earn a nice lump of cash from it.

15. Delivery Driver.

If you can drive you could earn money being a delivery driver, either for take out food or delivering parcels. There are lots of companies and agencies requiring drivers all the time. you may have to slightly upgrade your car/bike insurance but it could be worth a look.

16. Cleaner/Gardener/Handy Person.

If you can do any of the above jobs, you could search or advertise on classified sites or your social media to find potential clients looking for people to help them.

17. Temp Agency.

If none of the above appeal or are relevant to you, you could always wander into a local temp agency who will always have lots of seasonal appointments that have immediate starts.

In conclusion, we as teachers have a huge variety of skills. We can succeed at anything we try because we know how to work hard, we know how to organise and we know how to plan. In short, we can do ANYTHING!
